Let Them Eat Sheet Cake (and us wedding cake??)

I'm getting a little concerned about the guest list being so large-we're up to 200! Many of the wedding cakes that we have looked at only feed up to 150 (of course, we could always add another layer for a price lol). I have read online that some people will use a sheet cake for their guests and a smaller wedding cake for show. What is your take on this? lol. I think that the sheet cake is cut ahead of time, but the ceremony of cutting the wedding cake still takes place.

I think this is a great idea. First of all, a cake that feeds 200 would be taller than the bride. I've been to a few weddings that do this and I've liked it for three reasons:
1) The cake is served much faster because it is pre-cut.
2) The cake is sometimes tastier or there is a variety of cakes when the cake is made for its flavor, not its structural integrity.
3) Its much cheaper. You just can't argue with that. Plus I think the smaller "bride and groom" cakes that they cut are really cute.

I agree. Different people have different tastes, and you're not going to be able to please everyone with just one cake. Then there are the freaks like Laura's bf Andy who don't like cake at all. Weirdos. So I say go with a sheet cake that's half white half chocolate for the masses and something special for your cake.

Sounds good to me! For the bride and groom cake I think we're doing half chocolate half lemon with strawberry filling. The bridal party gets some as well. If you're not a lemon or strawberry person, then the half white half chocolate cake will be there too. A cake that feeds 200 WOULD be taller than me haha! :-)

I'll tell you my secret for my 250 guest wedding: I had a gorgeous display cake that fed 75 people, then I bought two $15 sheet cakes from Costco that hid in the back where the staff cut them up and served them sliced on the table. Saved me hundreds. Total cake price for 250 people: $380.
